Steel And Its Types In The Construction Industry



The majority of steel production goes to the construction industry. Steel structures can be built at a low price in a small time. Steel, in its various forms and alloys, can be modified to meet the demands of unique projects. On the basis of  conditions that the structure is exposed to, steel can be alloyed differently for protection. The major two types of steel used in the construction field are reinforcing steel and structural steel. 

Reinforcing Steel


Reinforcing steel (reinforcement steel), is a steel mesh(or bar) of steel wires used as a tension in reinforced concrete and masonry structures for strengthening. Reinforcing steel surfaces are normally patterned to form a better sync with the concrete. (These steel augmentations are generally used to compensate for the low tensile strength of concrete thus preventing from cracks. Reinforcing steel is solid bar and round most of the time.

Structural Steel

Structural steel is a group of steel used as a construction material for making structural steel shapes. A structural steel shape is formed with a particular cross section and mechanical properties.Structural steel types, such as I-beams, have high second moments of area, which allow them to be very stiff in respect to their cross-sectional area. Structural steel shapes, sizes, composition, strengths, storage practices, etc., are regulated by standards in most industrialized countries.
In some situations the steel reinforcements are merged with structural steel elements, such as a common connection in structures is a column for a structural steel frame embedded in a concrete foundation. There is a rebar welded to the column and extended out into the foundation for shear transfer. These are just a few of examples of the many different applications.
