Steel Dominance Over Automobile Industries

Unquestionably the most common material used in building Automobiles are steel. Steel is easy to work with, strong, cheap and readily available. So most car bodies are built from steel. Also it doesn’t take extremely specialized tools or knowledge to produce, manufacture and repair steel. The steel is mainly used for car roof, chassis, wheels, brakes, exhaust and engine.

As per the research around 900 kg of steel is used per vehicle. Steel usage is as follows.

i) 34% of steel is used in body structure, panels, doors and trunk closures for high strength and energy absorption in case of a crash.

ii) 12% is used in the suspension, using rolled high strength steel strip.

iii) 23% is in the drive train consisting of cast iron for the engine block and machinable carbon steel for the wear resistant gears.

iv) The remainder is found in the wheels, tyres, fuel tank, steering and braking systems.

Manufactures use steel because, it is the strongest and most affordable material out there for the application and can be engineered in a lot of different ways to meet the needs of crash safety and vehicle performance. Newer steel such as advanced high strength steel are doing good performance with less steel at a lighter weight.

Steel is infinitely recyclable and that’s of huge importance. Even recycled back into same product it does not degrade in quality which is called closed loop. Also steel is magnetic that makes it easy to draw out steel from any form.

Experts and researchers are constantly trying to make a better steel to meet the new challenges  that automobile customers are facing in terms of security and style. Steel suppliers in UAE have a great role in investing more money on research of new steel type with better qualities and possibilities.
